Students engage with farmers, cooperative, and community members to participate in the economic realities and challenges facing an international, alternative business model and the rural, agrarian community it supports. There is a focus on the cooperative’s work to support community food sovereignty through a hybrid model of rural entrepreneurship and sustainable agricultural methods.

Alternative Spring Break Students Make News!

Alternative Spring Break (ASB) students from UC Santa Cruz returned this week after spending their Spring Break in the Yucatan Peninsula in the community of Tzucacab. Taking a different approach to Spring Break, the 19 students picked Tzucacab rather than the beaches of Cancun. ASB in the Yucatan is a field course that focuses on the experience of intercultural exchange in Maya communities.

Announcing CAN’s Summer Field Course on Community Economic Development — June 19-July 2, 2012! This 2-week course will explore all aspects of a cooperative business structure at CAN's partner organization, the UCA San Ramón, a coffee producing cooperative in Nicaragua. Students will learn the agricultural and community context of the cooperative's work and engage in small projects related to the business plans and action plans that have come out of the Food Security projects that CAN and the UCA have been developing.

Yadira Montenegro: Keynote Speaker at Breaking Ground 2012

Over President’s Day weekend, February 17–20, 2012, the Real Food Challenge held its National Summit, Breaking Ground 2012. On Saturday morning, February 18, Yadira Montenegro from the Union of Cooperatives San Ramón, Nicaragua participated in a panel discussion. Ms. Montenegro was in Santa Cruz as part of CAN’s El Intercambio 2012.
