CAN works with this partner organization to achieve food security and sovereignty through participatory diagnostic studies that identify best practices for each individual cooperative, first with the initiation of a pilot project. This pilot project will evolve into a long-term strategy for the food security and freedom of this participating Nicaraguan community.
The first year of this pilot initiative followed the PAR process closely, building a foundation to harmonize a project management team, and develop a shared vision between CAN and its partner organizations in Las Segovias, Nicaragua. In its first two years, this initiative focused on identifying and disseminating both systemic and immediate causes of food insecurity among 18 cooperatives, and then the identification and dissemination of best practices for food security among the cooperatives. During the second year, CAN and its partner organizaions in Las Segovias developed and initiated a general action plan for 18 base cooperatives, including programs to implement seed-saving trainings to establish a community seed bank across these 18 participating cooperatives. Beginning its third year in January 2012, this initiative is launching full implementation and ongoing monitoring of collaboratively-developed food security strategies.
