Nicaragua Internship Program

Join CAN and the UCA San Ramon cooperative in a research-based internship program grounded in values of solidarity, cooperation, conservation and respect for life. We offer students and volunteers the opportunity to stay for an extended period of time in a cooperative community and undertake social and/or environmental investigations or small projects based around community development.

The internship program is built on mutually beneficial relationships between students, the cooperative and host families. We build solidarity by sharing ideas, experiences, learning and culture. Our goal is to increase consciousness and communication between consumers and the producers of coffee in the global South, diversify income for cooperative members and their families, and promote fairer trade while conserving biodiversity.

This program helps La UCA San Ramon improve the quality of services offered to 32 participating families. Specifically, the internship supports: an improved financial infrastructure in the community environmental protection and implementation of sustainable agriculture techniques improving cleanliness and sanitation in the community creating new options and opportunities for young cooperative members expanding the participatory action research (PAR) program Students come to learn distinct systems of farming and livestock production, share the culture of coffee from their home cities, participate in everyday social life and understand its interculturality. Students who chose to conduct thesis research share their findings with cooperative families as well as in academic circles at their home universities.
