Local Community
Jose Maria Morelos is located in the state of Quintana Roo, in the region center west, which is one of eight municipalities in Quintana Roo. The town of José María Morelos, where CAN's partner Mayan Intercultural University (UIMQRoo) is located, is in the heart of what is known as the “Zona Maya” of the state of Quintana Roo. Like most towns in this area it was first settled by the Maya and continues to be dominated by the Maya community. It is primarily an agricultural town and includes some ranching and forestry activities.
It is common to hear the local community members talking in their native Mayan tounge while walking down the street. Life in the city of Jose Maria Morelos is tr
anquil and the people of the local communities are very kind. During the week entertainments include movie projections in the theatre and during the weekends with the possibility of dance clubs.
The community has sporting facilities including a track for running, basketball courts, competitive soccer fields, a lush green area for diverse activities and a baseball field. There is also a city pool.
