Scholarship for Youth Leader in Food Security | Las Segovias, Nicaragua

Funding Goal: $6,000 to provide one five-year university scholarship to a youth leader

Project partners are working together to decrease hunger and poverty, as well as enhance food security by building resilient food and agricultural systems. The project goal is to increase on-farm diversification and seasonal crops during “lean” months when farm families do not have enough food to eat. We are increasing storage capacity for staple grains; improving livelihoods through the development of rural enterprises and cooperative-level projects; and improve soil fertility, agroecological farming practices, and nutrition and health. This project draws on CAN’s years of research and experience addressing issues of sustainable community development with farming communities in more than five different coffee producing regions throughout Central America and Mexico.

This project started in 2009, the Community Agroecology Network (CAN), together with PRODECOOP Cooperative and CII-ASDENIC (a local Nicaraguan-based NGO), initiated a project with Green Mountain Coffee Roasters. This project, located in the Las Segovias region of northern Nicaragua, reaches 740 households (approximately 4,440 people) in 18 rural cooperatives in Estelí, Madriz, and Nueva Segovia departments of Nicaragua.

Partners: PRODECOOP, RL is a Fair Trade coffee cooperative. It is a “cooperative of cooperatives” made up of 2,300 small producers, 30% of whom are women. Growers and producers are located in different communities and coffee-growing areas of the departments of Estelí, Madriz and Nueva Segovia, north of Nicaragua. PRODECOOP provides services such as marketing, technical assistance, training, credit, capacity building of cooperatives, improving coffee quality, and social projects.

Founded in 1990, La Asociación de Desarrollo Social de Nicaragua (ASDENIC, Social Development Association of Nicaragua)is a local development agency established by the National Assembly of Nicaragua. ASDENIC’s main goal is to promote social and economic development of rural communities and urban settlements primarily in the region of the Segovias in northern Nicaragua. In 1993, ASDENIC supported the development of Centro Integral de Informática (CII-ASDENIC, the Center for Integrated Information), a center for development and training in information and technology authorized by the Instituto Nacional Tecnológico (INATEC, The National Technology Institute).
